Demand #2: Disabled People Against Cuts - Rights not Charity
Guest demand by Disabled People Against the Cuts
DEMAND #2 Disabled People Against Cuts demand: Rights not Charity #SaveILF #ScrapWCA #EndSanctionsNow
We want justice, human rights and to be able to live and take part in society in the same way that non-disabled people take for granted. We have already borne the brunt of the austerity cuts, facing cuts nine times higher than others and for those with the most severe disabilities, cuts of nineteen times higher. We will not tolerate any further erosion of our living conditions or our human rights, nor will we sit quietly while politicians try to push us back to the margins of society.
Disabled people demand equality and to be able to live independently in the community with adequate levels of ‘care’ and support provided free at the point of need. No-one should have to pay twice for the ‘care’ and support needed to take part in society as is now the case. The Independent Living Fund (ILF) must be retained until such time as a viable alternative system of support for independent living is in place and working well.
Work Capability Assessments, which demonise disabled people at the same time as making massive profits for unscrupulous corporate firms, must end immediately and we must no longer be subjected to punishing regimes of assessment for disability benefits. We must be freed from the tyranny of a system that has pushed many thousands of us to death and suicide.
There must be an end to disabled people being forced to live in fear on a daily basis as a result of the austerity measures they are subjected to and we must live in a society where we are safe to walk down any street without facing the growing threats of hate crime and abuse.
Our value to society should no longer be measured as it is now simply in terms of how much profit we can generate for a capitalist system riddled with greed and corruption. We all contribute to society in many ways and the value of this should be recognised through a minimum level citizens income for all.
In the 7th richest nation in the world no-one should be left without a home, food or heating and neither disabled people, families with children or anyone else should be sanctioned and left without these basic essentials. We call for an immediate end to sanctions for all and an urgent housebuilding programme to end the scourge of homelessness. Essential utilities must be re-nationalised.
Disabled People Against Cuts (DPAC)
@dis_ppl_protest
DPAC is about disabled people and their allies. DPAC is UK based but we know that disabled people in other countries are suffering from austerity cuts and a lack of fundamental rights. We welcome all to join us in fighting for justice and human rights for all disabled people.
DPAC was formed by a group of disabled people after the 3rd October mass protests against cuts in Birmingham, England. The 3rd October saw the first mass protest against the austerity cuts and their impact on disabled people-It was led by disabled people under the name of The Disabled Peoples’ Protest.
